This Sonic 3 Prototype Reveals a 20-Year-Old Secret
We happen to know a lot about the development process of Sonic 2, because several unfinished prototypes have been discovered over the years. But that’s not the case with Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Outside of magazine articles giving us a taste of what the game looked like, we would never see a Sonic 3 prototype surface, until recently.

So you’ve probably heard the terms “unlicensed game” or “pirated game”. But that’s the difference? When you hear the term “pirate” or “bootleg” you might automatically think bad, but is that really the case? We’ll take a look at one of the most well-known pirated game companies, Hummer Team. As you probably know, the Sega Game Gear and Atari Lynx did not outsell the Game Boy, despite having superior hardware. Better hardware does not mean a better console. But one company came up with a creative idea. Why not offer similar hardware at a lower price? Could this be the way of beating the Game Boy once and for all? Sonic fans would search for over two decades for lost unfinished copies not meant for redistribution. SEGA releasing Sonic 06 so the fans dont have to search for broken games. LOL. Just kidding. I love DRX and their contributions;)

    It's so weird how these games started out just random as kids, then we grew up and noticed the environmental storytelling, the way it actually makes sense that you're moving through these areas in this order, and then.. we start wondering what the real 'canon' order is since we can see the clear revisions... anyway just to point this out as I always do, MJ didn't write the music. He didn't write music, he performed it. _The people who wrote his music_ wrote songs for this game, including Brad Buxer. And they never got paid, which is the reason those songs can't ever be used. Sega will not shell out the cash.

    funny thing is, i actually WANTED this as a kid for christmas aside from it being cheap, and kinda crap, it made for a decent introduction to a handful of the NES library before i eventually got an actual NES system, and this was right when i was getting into retro gaming as a kid

    The Sonic and Knuckles Collection was produced due to Sega severing ties because of Michael Jackson's suspected child molestation. Also the music used by that collection is actually the Beta Music, before Sega scrapped it for MJs tunes

    Interesting video! Thank you for uploading it! As a programmer and hobbyist Game Developer (occasionally, when I have the time and energy), I wonder why Sega would have withheld resources from 3rd Party Developers? Did they really do that? And if they did... was it that they would want their own games to look better? Or that they just didn't know that they should share their work? We all make mistakes, so I am not poking fun at Sega. It's sad that they did not win enough attention in the Console Wars, because I really liked them as a Developer / Publisher, and greatly enjoyed their games and consoles as a child. I do think Nintendo understood some really fundamental concepts on what makes a game fun. And that attribute of Nintendo gave it a fighting edge in the Console Wars. But Sega's consoles will be missed. I think they are a really unique and fun company... and I like the character that they add to the video game Market. Thank you for the video! 😊

    The music for Flying Battery also comes first in the Sonic 3 level select screen. I believe this is also true in Sonic 3C builds and Sonic 3 & Knuckles final, I'm not positive on the lock-on though. It was more than just time constraints though. Japan didn't get Sonic 3 until after 3C was abandoned. They needed a 4MB cartridge, Sega of Japan didn't produce these for the Megadrive, only the US did

    What if Spinball and MeanBean Machine never existed? While Sega of Japan and USA got along better and had no barriers whatsoever? And if they've worked on Sonic 3 together? While as a full-game, but keep it as short as Sonic 2. While it was never intended to be an isometric game. And if it never got split in-half(had it not been for McDonalds)? And if Masato Nakamura returned to the series to make Sonic 3's ost? And if it came out sooner by November 1993? So in conclusion, how'd this have changed Sega and Sonic's history(even the re-releases)? What new Sonic games would've came out from 1994 onwards? Imagine living in that parallel universe. With altered memories and pov.

    MMC5 technically has... One additional sound channel? But it only works in famicom which has wiring for it much like konami's chips. GIMMICK or Batman or some other SunSoft game got approval to use it's own mapper, likely because it was late days of NES, the quality of the game and company, and they still had to remove additional sound channel usage to be a full experience on American systems.

    Fun fact, the special stages' palettes are meant to mimic the respective stage order; if you look at the 5th special stage, it's colors still mimic Flying Battery's color scheme in the final game, alluding to it's original position.

    I don't think the PC version using the alternate tracks had anything to do with copyrights, as Sega released Sonic Jam on the Saturn with the same music from the Genesis/Mega Drive retail release (and this was a complete re-coding of those games, so it's not like they were simply running the ROM). I believe different people handled the Windows version, and perhaps they had the prototype material as reference rather than the retail. Some pages indicate the developer was Media Kite, so it's very possible that Sega gave them a prototype (or prototype assets) at the time they began developing the Windows port, . Also, since the Windows version used MIDI, it's very possible they opted to use the prototype music because they couldn't do the voice samples in them. Regardless of who developed this game and whether or not they were aware of the retail release's soundtrack, they did decide to make this version's music ENTIRELY MIDI, so whether by accident or design, they would've had trouble using the samples (although it's debatable whether or not they could've just opted to make it some other instrument hit the same note/key).

    This is more like a beta than a prototype, it was dated as late as November 1993, only three months before the game was already on store shelves. The fact that it transformed so drastically from this unfinished mess into the completed product we know in only a couple months shows how arduous and extensive its crunch development was in the final stretch.

    Several things to point out: 1. All of this have been discussed already since 2019, way too late talking about all this now 2. Sonic 3 is going on 30 years now actually 3. They had to split the game in two to make McDonald's promotion with the hedgehog 4. Sonic & Knuckles actually ended up with 7 zones, 8 if you count the Hidden Place portion of Lava Reef as a separate zone 5. It was already a well known fact that Flying Battery were supposed to come after Carnival Night 6. You can say that Knuckles share Tails' paths in Flying Battery, but does that technically makes these Knuckles' own paths since Tails is not natively playable on Sonic & Knuckles standalone??? Just a thought 7. Robotnik wears a metal helmet for disguise??? No, this is another enemy called Egg Robo, who have survived Sonic's run and then went on to replace the actual Robotnik as boss, since Knuckles' run takes place after Sonic's 8. Those tracks and a few others were composed by Brad Buxer actually, who collaborated with Michael Jackson on some of them, the latter left the development reporting unsatisfaction with the sounds on the game and was subsequently not credited. Its not widely known why these "prototype" tracks were specifically replaced with the final ones, but we know now why the latter could not be used in further rereleases, the very reason why this game was constantly skipped over for many years up until recently

And that was the same damn time I finally wanted to buy one and try it , yet saw I was way too late for the party when I noticed they were long gone. Last year however, I spotted a lady at a flea market who had only one box of this system but I was so friggin' skeptical and passed on it. Now there are these lame bootleg small nes consoles. The whole idea of Ultra was Nintendo's idea. Konami asked for an exception to the 5 games a year cap Nintendo gave their licenses and they said no. However, they said, there's nothing stopping you from obtaining a second license. The whole thing was written about in "Game Over" and there was nothing nefarious about it. Just good business for both companies.

    1. Nobody who paid any attention was confused about Ultra being Konami. This wasn't a secret. 2. Nintendo was completely fine with this "loophole". They didn't have to license Ultra. The reason why other companies couldn't set up their own Ultra was because Nintendo didn't allow it. 3. Still, companies frequently licensed games to other publishers to release in the US. Galaga was released by Bandai, for example. 4. The decision to release on Ultra or Konami was sometimes based on a franchise, but they also had to consider which label had open slots on which platform.

    This console is not a Game Boy clone, unlike the Mega Duck. It does use a slightly worse version of an extremely common chip, the 6502.Variants of this powered most of the 8-bit home computers and the NES. (Others were powered by the similar Z80). In a portable console without special graphics hardware this chip was going to be underpowered. The console could not have beaten the Game Boy, nor was it intended to. Only in retrospect might this seem like a thing. 3-years on, this was a designed to look like the Game Boy. In modern terms, "We have a Game Boy at home". The Game Boy was already not the best of hardware, and this was worse in nearly every way. The market of people who couldn't afford a Game Boy but would buy lots of software was not large. This system was always supposed to be bargain bin trash.

  • @kyleolson8977
    @kyleolson8977 3 дні тому

    You needed more research here. This isn't just a possibly a knockoff. It's a near 100% clone, the only change to remove the Nintendo lockout feature and rearrange addresses to avoid legal issues, I would assume. When you say "The CPU is similar, both clocking in at 4 MHz" you are wrong. It has the same CPU. It has the same System on a Chip, an SoC designed for the Game Boy. It has the same two 8K memory blocks. Everything here is compatible with the Game Boy, except the physical slot, register locations changed, an the system does not have the boot logo screen which serves as a Game Boy lockout chip. A Game Boy rom is mostly identical except for the data for the boot logo, and the register locations used. Emulators can play the games easily. You would need to do a little more address changing to make a compatible physical rom. Cloning is common when systems are made of standard parts. Sega's SG-1000 is almost identical to the Colecovision.
